March 1-12, 2016
Gordon and Leesa and family went off to the islands of St. Somewhere with a group of friends and left us with Lola.
At one year old she still has plenty of puppy energy and mischievousness:
She sneaked in behind me when I was on the couch at the beach and raided Connie's knitting stash.
She made a few trips from the stash to the porch and back before we caught her.
Rewinding the wet and knotted yarn was a good mental workout.
Her other trick was to grab pillows and coasters off the tables and chairs for a little chew.
We obviously were unprepared and had not done enough puppy proofing.
Connie and I tried taking her on separate walks to wear her out but being at Virginia Beach was too exciting. I had forgotten that even a dead earthworm was interesting enough to bring in and rub around on.
Lola really wanted to get reacquainted with her canine friends from the summer that used to gather each day at 8:30 am in front of the house, but we had no way to get the sand off so she had to just watch.
When we came back to Richmond we tried a really long walk over to A&T's school. She loved that walk, especially the sight of a deer. My left arm muscles are quite buff now from attempting to get her to heel.
Now our vacation is more than halfway over and Lola has settled in to her life on Cherokee Road. She loves the morning walk, the afternoon walk to chase the geese and sleeping on the basement couch at night.
Well, those notes were from Tuesday. Now this is Friday, the day before Lola gets her playmates back. I think we have not been as playful with her as August and Thomas are although last night I did run her pretty hard around the island in the kitchen.
The above comment where I said she likes sleeping on the couch at night is mostly true, but during one of the basketball games she somehow sneaked up on Connie's yarn again.
Yesterday Connie put some Quaker Oat Squares up on her kitchen desk and Lola saw them. Two hours later after a walk and dinner Lola went right to the desk and jumped up to try to find them (gone- I ate them). Long memory and pretty smart.
Friday morning finds Lola in the penalty box. After her breakfast and a prairie dog chew and a Sherpa bone, I left her in the laundry room to get ready to go to work. As I was getting dressed, I heard something and came out of the closet to look for a crow on the roof over the kitchen or something like that. Instead there was Lola upstairs in our room eating a skein of green yarn she had picked up somewhere. In taking her back downstairs I found one of our big pine cones chewed up and on the floor of the kitchen. I still haven't figured out how she got out of the laundry room.
Now it is Saturday morning. I took Lola out to get the paper with me and we spooked 10 deer in the driveway circle. She would have chased them to Petersburg if she hadn't been on the leash. Then we went down to the river and chased the geese off twice, to the praise of Marilyn next door.
Then I took her home. Thomas was very happy to see her and she was glad to see him. Deer and goose memories gone. I miss her already.
